History of Hawaiian Leis

Leis has become a trademark product in Hawaii. It is a traditional art, which uses flowers to make a beautiful wreath, which is renowned, the leis. In fact, leis is a Hawaiian term for garland or a wreath. Wreaths are a commonplace for products in ceremonies like weddings, birthdays, and burials. They are also very common in offices.  Leis, from the Hawaiian context or perspective are any series of flowers put and bound together well to make an object, which anyone can wear.

The most commonplace leis concept is in Hawaii. It is a wreath of fresh beautiful and fragrance flower that is well woven to make unique neck leis. These types of wreaths are usually made for wearing on the neck. Typically, it is like a flower necklace. Traditionally, the Hawaiians have the tendency of welcoming people to their Island in a very warm manner. Putting the flower necklace to the visitor is a very kind gesture culturally in the Island. However, over the years the island has become the hub of tourism and tourist have come to love making leis. Creating leis products in the Hawaiian culture is growing and now becoming a very high competition business.

Historically, the Hawaiians regarded the Hawaiian leis as a symbol of affection to arriving visitors. Today, tourists visiting the island are draped with these flower wreaths around the neck upon arrival though for a fee. In the past leis was not commercialized, the popularization of Hawaii as a destination for tourists and rich families from all corners of the world changed the fortunes of leis manufacturing. Now it is a key business concept in the Hawaiian island. The concept of affection is also traced to sweethearts. People in Hawaii referred their loved ones especially kids and sweethearts as ‘lei’

Hawaiian Leis are traditionally a Hawaiian art, which has been around for a long time. In fact, it has continued to be a predominant feature in Hawaiian occasions. Such occasions include weddings, bridal parties, birthdays, graduations, retirement parties, and funerals. Traditionally lei are worn exaggeratedly especially by young people including young high schools students.

In May 1st, Hawaiians celebrate ‘leis day’ which was in 1927 by Don Blanding who was a poet. Blanding worked for the Honolulu Star Bulletin. His idea of lei was incepted after he talked it out with Honolulu Star Bulletin columnist Grace Tower Warren, who incepted the leis day song ‘May day is leis day in Hawaii’, which is popularly renowned, the Hawaiian song and was composed in 1927 by Ruth and Leonard ‘Red Hawk’

Hawaiians still celebrate Leis day in Honolulu. One of the longest leis to be made for the celebrations measured 5,336 feet in length, which is more than one mile. This happened in the 81st annual anniversary of the Leis day at Kapolei Park in Honolulu. Leis have gone strong. From just an art, it has turned into a key practice and now investors have managed to turn it into a key investment. Companies in the Island have capitalized on making quality Hawaiian leis and have transformed the lei platform from a mere tradition to a complete business platform for the island.
